Murex exilis was named by Parsch in Hörnes (1856) [DISTRIBUTION: Early Miocene; central Paratethys.]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Thais (Stramonita) exilis by Baluk (1995) and Harzhauser (2002).
