Murex scalaris was named by Brocchi (1814) [DISTRIBUTION: Early Miocene; Europe.]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Ocinebrina scalaris by Rossi-Ronchietti (1955); it was recombined as Ocenebra (Ocinebrina) scalaris by Stojaspal (1978); it was recombined as Ocenebra scalaris by Harzhauser (2002).
