Pleurotoma (Pleuroliria) was named by Gregario (1890) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m-u T Ol-l Sepkoski's reference number: 700]. Its type is Pleurotoma (Pleuroliria) supramirifica.

It was reranked as Polystira (Pleuroliria) by Gardner (1947); it was reranked as Pleuroliria by Harris and Palmer (1947), Woodring (1970), Hickman (1976) and Sepkoski (2002).

It was assigned to Pleurotoma by Gregario (1890); to Polystira by Gardner (1947); to Turridae by Harris and Palmer (1947); to Turrinae by Woodring (1970) and Hickman (1976); and to Neogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002).
