Pomahakia was named by Finlay (1927) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-u Sepkoski's reference number: 899]. Its type is Pomahakia aberrans.

It was assigned to Siphonaliinae by Finlay (1928); to Buccinulidae by Powell (1929); to Buccinidae by Beu et al. (1990); and to Neogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002).
