Ponderia was named by Houart (1986) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-l R]. It is extant. Its type is Typhis zelandica.

It was assigned to Typhinae by Wilson (1994); to Muricidae by Lozouet (1998); and to Neogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002).
