Psephaea was named by Crosse (1871) [Sepkoski's age data: T Than R Sepkoski's reference number: 794]. It is extant.

It was reranked as Fulgoraria (Psephaea) by Nagao (1928), Mount (1976) and Oleinik and Marincovich (2003).

It was assigned to Volutidae by Addicott (1970); to Neogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Fulgoraria by Nagao (1928), Mount (1976) and Oleinik and Marincovich (2003).
