Pseudofax was named by Finlay and Marwick (1937) [Sepkoski's age data: T Dani T Eo]. Its type is Phos ordinarius.

It was assigned to Buccinidae by Beu et al. (1990) and Chiesa et al. (1995); to Neogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Buccininae by Stilwell et al. (2004).
