Purpura was named by Bruguière (1789) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi R]. It is extant. Its type is Purpura foliata.

It was assigned to Gastropoda by Sellards (1917); to Thaidinae by Wilson (1994); to Neogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Muricidae by Chiesa et al. (1995), Todd (2001) and Harzhauser (2002).
