Patella aculeata was named by Gmelin (1791) [DISTRIBUTION: North Carolina-Colombia, circum-Caribbean.]. It is extant.

It was recombined as Crypta aculeata by Holmes (1859); it was recombined as Crepidula aculeata by Guppy (1864), Woodring and Bramlette (1950) and Kern (1973); it was recombined as Bostrycapulus aculeatus by Hendy (2020).
