Murex rana was named by Linnaeus (1758) [DISTRIBUTION: Miocene-Recent; Indo-Pacific.]. It is extant.

It was recombined as Bursa (Bufonaria) rana by MacNeil (1961); it was recombined as Bufonaria rana by Jensen (1996) and Okutani (2000); it was recombined as Bufonaria (Bufonaria) rana by Beu (1987) and Beu (2005).
