Nerita melanostoma was named by Gmelin (1791) [DISTRIBUTION: Pliocene-Recent; Indo-Pacific.]. It is extant.

It was recombined as Polinices melanostoma by Nomua (1934); it was recombined as Mammilla melanostoma by Majima (1989) and Okutaini (2000).
