Pholas patagonica was named by Philippi (1887) [DISTRIBUTION: Oligocene-Miocene; Chile, Argentina.]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Martesia patagonica by Ihering (1897); it was recombined as Pholadidea patagonica by Frassinetti and Covacevich (1999).
