Millepora subpirenaica was named by Altuna et al. (2007). Its type locality is Binacua, Bartonian Corals, Belsué-Atarés fm, Pyrenees, which is in a Bartonian perireef or subreef marl in the Belsué-Atarés Formation of Spain.
