Tholitoma was named by Finlay and Marwick (1937) [Sepkoski's age data: T Dani T Eo-u Sepkoski's reference number: 696]. Its type is Tholitoma dolorosa.

It was reranked as Cosmasyrinx (Tholitoma) by Stilwell et al. (2004).

It was assigned to Neogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Cosmasyrinx by Stilwell et al. (2004).
