Taxonomy
Sanchuansaurus was named by Gao (1989). It is not extant. Its type is Sanchuansaurus pygmaeus.

It was synonymized subjectively with Shansisaurus by Li and Liu (2013).

It was assigned to Pareiasauria by Lee (1997); and to Pareiasauridae by Gao (1989) and Benton (2016).
