Petalichthyi was named by Jaekel (1911).

It was corrected as Petalichthyida by Obruchev (1964), Denison (1975), Dineley and Metcalf (1999) and Young (2010); it was reranked as the order Petalichthyida by Denison (1978); it was misspelled as Petalichthida by Sepkoski (2002); it was synonymized subjectively with Petalichthyiformes by Long (2011).

It was assigned to Ptychostei by Jaekel (1911); to Arthrodira by Obruchev (1964); to Placodermi by Denison (1975); and to Placodermi by Denison (1978), Dineley and Metcalf (1999), Sepkoski (2002) and Young (2010).
