Nisusia cloudi

Nisusia cloudi was named by Shaw (1957) [Nisusia aff. N. amii Shaw 1954 GSA Bulletin 65:1043; Nisusia aff. N. amii Shaw 1955 J. Paleo 29: 790 pl. 76f. 7-8]. Its type specimen is UW-258n, a shell, and it is not a trace fossil. Its type locality is SA-EC-1, which is in a Delamaran carbonate limestone/shale in the Parker Slate Formation of Vermont.

A. B. Shaw 1957Most of the brachiopods collected from Locality SA-EC-1 belong to what appears to be a new species closely related to Nisusia amii. They differ from that species in having the rough irregular ribbing of N. festinata instead of the smooth fine ribbing of N. amii. It is possible that the Parker form is a transition from N, festinata to N. amii.

Undistorted shells are about 15 mm. wide. The ribs are irregular, thickening slightly around what seem to be spine bases. Ribs increase by both intercalation and bifurcation. The cardinal margin is straight and is uniformly narrower than the greatest width of the shell. This contrasts with N. festinata in which the hinge line is the widest point on the shell.
