Mytilus lithophaga was named by Linnaeus (1758) [DISTRIBUTION: Early Miocene-Recent; Europe, Mediterranean, Iran.]. It is extant.

It was recombined as Lithophagus lithophagus by Sacco (1898); it was recombined as Lithophaga lithophaga by Cox (1936) and Callapez and Ferreira Soares (2000).
