Aplustrum was named by Schumacher (1817) [Sepkoski's age data: K u R]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Aplustrinae.

It was assigned to Cephalaspida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Aplustrinae by Bouchet et al. (2005).
