Taxonomy
Saurosuchus galilei was named by Reig (1959). Its type specimen is PVL 2062, a skull, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Hoyada de Ischiqualasto, upper third, which is in a Carnian/Norian terrestrial horizon in the Ischigualasto Formation of Argentina.

Trotteyn et al. 2011Archosaur differing from other crurotarsi by the following combination of characters: roof of skull and maxilla ornamented; postfrontal reduced in dorsal view; frontal with a thin rim dorsally limiting orbit; lateral process at poste-rolateral end of frontal; ventral process of lacrimal high pillar-shaped, and contacting laterally with jugal; supraoccipital with a longitudinal crest dorsally located and laterosfenoid with a robust protuberance laterally expanded. it also differs from other “rauisichids” (except Fasolasuchs), by the presence of accessory articulation structures (hyposphene and hypanthrum) in the posterior cervical vertebrae.
