Strophalosia preovalis was named by Maxwell (1954). Its type specimen is UQ F15622, a shell (ventral valve), and it is not a trace fossil.
It was recombined as Wyndhamia preovalis by McCarthy et al. (1974); it was recombined as Echinalosia preovalis by Waterhouse (1983) and Briggs (1998).
