Alycaeinae was named by Blanford (1864). It is extant. Its type is Alycaeus.

It was reranked as the family Alycaeidae by Yu et al. (2022).

It was assigned to Cyclophoridae by Bouchet et al. (2005) and Raheem and Schneider (2017); and to Cyclophoroidea by Yu et al. (2022).
