Semivertagus was named by Cossmann (1880) [Sepkoski's age data: K Maes R]. It is extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Rhinoclavis by Houbrick (1992) and Harzhauser (2004); it was reranked as Clava (Semivertagus) by Pacaud and Le Renard (1995) and Hendy (2007).

It was assigned to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Clava by Pacaud and Le Renard (1995) and Hendy (2007).
