Mactra congesta was named by Conrad (1833) [DISTRIBUTION: Miocene-Early Pliocene; Atlantic Coastal Plain, Florida.]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Mulinia congesta by Olsson and Petit (1964).
