Volvulella was named by Newton (1891) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 1248]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Acteocinidae by Addicott (1970); to Cephalaspida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Retusidae by Todd (2001), Rosenberg (2005) and Wienrich and Janssen (2007).
