Cancellaria tenera was named by Philippi (1848) [DISTRIBUTION: Pliocene-Recent; Florida.]. It is extant. It is the type species of Ventrilia.

It was recombined as Cancellaria (Trigonostoma) tenera by Dall (1890); it was recombined as Ventrilia tenera by Mansfield (1930); it was recombined as Trigonostoma tenera by DuBar (1958); it was recombined as Trigonostoma (Ventrilia) tenera by Petit (1967), Petit (1976) and Jung and Petit (1990); it was recombined as Ventrilia tenerum by Landau et al. (2012).
