Scalaria varicosa was named by Lamarck (1822) [DISTRIBUTION: Recent.]. It is extant. It is the type species of Cirsotrema.

It was recombined as Cirsotrema varicosa by Mörch (1852), Dushane (1988) and Duerr (2004).
