Owenettidae was named by Broom (1939). It is not extant. Its type is Owenetta. It was considered monophyletic by Lee (1995), Lee (1997) and Modesto and Damiani (2007) and Säilä (2008).
It was assigned to Procolophonia by Broom (1939); to Procolophonia by Kuhn (1966); and to Procolophonoidea by Lee (1995), Lee (1997), Reisz and Scott (2002), Modesto et al. (2003), Cisneros et al. (2004), Modesto and Damiani (2007) and Säilä (2008).
