Epitoniacea was named by Berry (1910) [m. kosnik taxon no: 6065]. It is extant.

It was corrected as Epitonioidea by Bouchet et al. (2005).

It was assigned to Cephalaspidea by Sohl (1964); to Mesogastropoda by Sohl (1964); to Janthinoidea by Ponder and Warén (1988); and to Ptenoglossa by Ward and Blackwelder (1987) and Bouchet et al. (2005).
