Longchaeus was named by Mörch (1875) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 700]. It is extant.

It was reranked as Pyramidella (Longchaeus) by Oostingh (1935), Pilsbry and Olsson (1941) and Addicott (1970).

It was assigned to Pyramidella by Oostingh (1935), Pilsbry and Olsson (1941) and Addicott (1970); to Pyramidellidae by Todd (2001); to Heterostrophia by Sepkoski (2002); and to Pyramidellinae by Rosenberg (2005).
