Charniodiscus spinosus was named by Laflamme et al. (2004) [DISTRIBUTION: Ediacaran; North America; Mistaken Point]. Its type specimen is ROM 36047 and is an impression.

It was recombined as Arborea spinosa by Pérez-Pinedo et al. (2022).
