Plesiopithecus was named by Simons (1992). Its type is Plesiopithecus teras. It was considered monophyletic by Gunnell et al. (2018).

It was assigned to Hominoidea by Simons (1992); to Strepsirrhini by Seiffert et al. (2005); and to Chiromyiformes by Gunnell et al. (2018).
