Omalaxis was named by Deshayes (1832) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-l T Eo-m-u Sepkoski's reference number: 914,1066].

It was assigned to Gastropoda by Agassiz (1845); to Heterostrophia by Sepkoski (2002); to Omalaxinae by Bouchet et al. (2005); and to Omalaxidae by Global Biodiversity Information Facility (2015).
