Omalaxis was named by Deshayes (1832) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-l T Eo-m-u Sepkoski's reference number: 914,1066]. Its type is Solarium disjunctum. It is the type genus of Omalaxinae.
It was assigned to Gastropoda by Agassiz (1845); to Heterostrophia by Sepkoski (2002); to Omalaxidae by Allison (1955) and Global Biodiversity Information Facility (2015); and to Omalaxinae by Bouchet et al. (2005) and Bouchet et al. (2017).
