Taxonomy
Melania vetusta was named by Conrad (1833) [DISTRIBUTION: Middle Eocene; Gulf Coastal Plain. COMMENTS: m. kosnik taxon no: 6741 (incorrectly originally assigned to Mesalia); type specimen based on lectotype.]. Its type specimen is ANSP 15490, a shell, and it is not a trace fossil.
It was recombined as Sigmesalia vetusta by Glibert (1962); it was recombined as Mesalia vetusta by Harris and Palmer (1947), Palmer and Brann (1966) and Kosnik (2002).
