Phaneroptyxis was named by Cossmann (1896) [Sepkoski's age data: J Bath K Apti-l Sepkoski's reference number: 120,909].

It was assigned to Itieriidae by Kase (1984) and Buitrón-Sánchez and López-Tinajero (1995); and to Heterostrophia by Sepkoski (2002).
