Xenophora carditigera was named by Nielsen and DeVries (2002) [DISTRIBUTION: Oligocene; Peru.]. Its type specimen is SMF 323039, a shell, and it is not a trace fossil. Its type locality is DV 631-8 [Paracas Fm], which is in an Eocene coastal sandstone/sandstone in the Paracas Formation of Peru.
