Strombus obliteratus was named by Hanna (1926) [DISTRIBUTION: Pliocene; California.]. Its type specimen is CAS 1809, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is CAS 682 - Alverson CaƱon [Imperial Fm], which is in a Pliocene marine sandstone in California.
It was recombined as Persististrombus obliteratus by Kronenberg and Lee (2007) and Powell (2008).
