Leptosaurus was named by Fitzinger (1837).

It was synonymized subjectively with Kallimodon by Cocude-Michel (1963).

It was assigned to Mosasauridae by McDowell and Bogert (1954); and to Sphenodontidae by Renesto and Viohl (1997).
