Voluta depauperata was named by Sowerby (1823) [DISTRIBUTION: Eocene; western Europe.]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Athleta depauperata by Morellet and Morellet (1940); it was recombined as Athleta depauperatus by Piccoli and Savazzi (1983); it was recombined as Athleta (Volutospina) depauperatus by Pacaud and Le Renard (1995).
