Taxonomy
Strombus athleta was named by Solander in Brander (1877) [DISTRIBUTION: Eocene; western Europe. ]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Athleta athleta by Staad and Cossmann (1913); it was recombined as Athleta (Volutospina) athleta by Pacaud and Le Renard (1995).
