Trimusculus was named by Schmidt (1818) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-u R]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Trimusculidae, Trimusculoidea.

It was assigned to Basommatophora by Sepkoski (2002); and to Trimusculidae by Bouchet et al. (2005).
