Taxonomy
Archaeocyathus abacus was named by Kruse (1991). It is not a trace fossil. Its type locality is Ten Miles Creek bioherms, Flinders Ranges, which is in a Toyonian reef, buildup or bioherm framestone/packstone in the Wirrealpa Limestone Formation of Australia.
