Ostrea gigantica was named by Solander in Brander (1766) [DISTRIBUTION: Eocene; western Europe.]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Chama gigantea by Lowry et al. (1866); it was recombined as Ostrea (Gigantostrea) gigantica by Sacco (1897); it was recombined as Gigantostrea gigantea by Vialov (1936); it was recombined as Pycnodonte (Pycnodonte) gigantica by Glibert and Van de Poel (1965); it was recombined as Pycnodonte gigantea by Glibert and van de Poel (1965); it was recombined as Pycnodonte gigantica by Glibert (1975); it was misspelled as Ostrea gigantea by Burton (1933); it was recombined as Gigantostrea gigantica by Pacaud and Le Renard (1995).
