Palaeoceras was named by Flower (1954) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Trep-u Sepkoski's reference number: 297]. Its type is Palaeoceras mutabile.

It was assigned to Plectronoceratidae by Flower (1964), Teichert et al. (1964) and Crick (1981); and to Plectonocerida by Sepkoski (2002).
