Murex crispus was named by Lamarck (1803) [DISTRIBUTION: Eocene; western Europe.]. It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Grignon (Lamarck collection), which is in a Lutetian open shallow subtidal sandstone/sandstone in France.
It was recombined as Hexaplex crispus by Piccoli and Savazzi (1983); it was recombined as Crassimurex crispus by Pacaud and Le Renard (1995).
