Anguloceras was named by Unklesbay and Young (1956) [Sepkoski's age data: O Trem Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. Its type is Anguloceras ovatum.

It was assigned to Ellesmeroceratidae by Unklesbay and Young (1956); to Bassleroceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964) and Crick (1981); and to Ellesmerocerida by Sepkoski (2002).
