Murex nexilis was named by Solander and Brander (1766) [DISTRIBUTION: Eocene; western Europe.]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Pyrula nexilis by Deshayes (1835); it was recombined as Ficus (Fulguroficus) nexilis by Korobkov (1955); it was recombined as Ficus nexilis by Vokes (1971) and Squires (2014).
