Cartersoceras was named by Flower (1964) [Sepkoski's age data: O Llde O Cara Sepkoski's reference number: 2,298]. It is not extant. Its type is Cartersoceras shideleri.
It was assigned to Baltoceratidae by Flower (1964), Crick (1981) and Frey (1995); to Ellesmerocerida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Sactorthoceratidae by Kröger et al. (2007).
