Caseoceras was named by Ulrich et al. (1943) [Sepkoski's age data: O Trem-u Sepkoski's reference number: 524]. Its type is Caseoceras contractum.
It was assigned to Cyrtendoceratidae by Ulrich et al. (1943); to Ellesmeroceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964) and Crick (1981); and to Ellesmerocerida by Sepkoski (2002).
